Mr. Brier shared his stock vs. flow analogy. “Stock” are the durable observations that brands can make — the high-production-value messages that brands are already good at producing. “Flow,” on the other hand, is more fleeting, the “breadcrumbs” that brands aren’t good at getting a handle on. While stock attracts new customers, flow is what keeps them engaged. The challenge is to find a balance between both of them, said Mr. Brier. “What we do in marketing is sell stuff,” he said. “So when you think about your social content, you have to think about how you’re going to break down the selling and the non-selling.””

The other dominant trend is that social is a new, disruptive event in advertising, rather than just a continuation of the migration of media from traditional to the Web, and will have real ramifications on how we receive our entertainment and news.”

Yes. At root it’s because social must be emotional. The disruption is that reach as the premium that all marketers sought out of their advertising is being replaced by engagement. Reach is ignored. Engagement is passed. That’s the world we live in and if you insist on algorithmically optimizing you’ll attract more bots than humans. (See a large propotion of adsense success)

It doesn’t make advertising any more accountable, but it sure makes it more interesting.
