What strikes me about Slater more than anything else is he simply doesn’t seem to age. I was lucky enough to surf with him once at Pt. Mugu in Southern California. It is a private break that you could only gain access to if you worked on the base or were in the navy…. There was one other loophole……. They had a public golf course on the base so we used to dress up like golfers and tell security we were going to play 9 holes. The back of our truck had a tonneau cover on it and they never checked it for golf clubs, or better yet, surfboards. One time when I was out there, with perfect empty head high surf, Slater was as well. He was amazing and had an energy about him. With the video above, 12 years later, he looks exactly the same.
